What are Therapeutic Contact Lenses?

Therapeutic contact lenses satisfy a medically necessary function for the people who use them. The most common functions are providing clear vision to those cannot achieve this with glasses and/or conventional contact lenses and the treatment of dry eye disease.

How can therapeutic contact lenses improve my vision?

The clear front surface of the eye, known as the cornea, plays a critical role in our vision. It works best when it has a regular shape. Unfortunately, many conditions of the cornea distort its shape resulting in decreased vision in glasses and conventional contact lenses. Therapeutic contact lenses help overcome this distorted or irregular shape, restoring vision for many patients who have otherwise been unable to improve their vision. Examples of conditions that may benefit from therapeutic contact lenses include:

How can therapeutic contact lenses help my dry eye?

Our eyes see and feel their best when they are hydrated. Scleral lenses can help us accomplish this, even for the most severe dry eye cases. Scleral lenses create a fluid layer underneath the lens that remains in contact with the eye the entire time the lens is worn. This layer of fluid provides constant moisture to the front surface of the eye, in many cases improving comfort, decreasing the number of drops needed, and improving vision. Examples of conditions that may benefit from therapeutic scleral lenses include:

• Dry Eye Syndrome or Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca

• Graft-versus-host disease

• Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency

• Neurotrophic or exposure keratopathy

• Sjogren’s Syndrome
